dd In Spring of 1996, I was sitting in my living room in Austin, Texas. I was scanning over the thousands of bands who were playing at the SXSW Music Conference and Festival. I was devoutly scouring over the usual “Austin Music Bands” and their European clones asking myself, "who is going to be worth reviewing this year?" Quite ironically, my room-mate, Goose yelled at me from his throne in the bathroom: Hey! Clutch is playing at Liberty Lunch. Lights went off. I thought to myself: Oh yeah, its gonna be a worthy SXSW after all.

At the time, I knew the basics about the band. The self-titled release, “Clutch” was receiving radio airplay with the song "Spacegrass". It is a song about getting high in space. What more does a good song have to be about?

Their promo pack included a photograph of the band posing as N.A.S.A scientist. Therefore, most people had no idea what they looked like. It didn't matter. "Clutch" stood on its own. It is a powerful mixture of music. It was one of the best hard rock recodings of the early nineties. It left me wanting more.

Since 1996, I have learned a lot about the men, the music, the business and the fans that are all a part of ClutchNext
